The Sangha Core Sutra Study Program (SCSSP)

Ten years ago, Dharmacharya Chan Huy and several other pioneers developed the e-Talks as a means to support our sanghas in more deeply understanding Thay’s teachings. Over the years, the formats have changed, and they will certainly continue to evolve.

If you want to receive the invitation to these events, which contain links to pre-readers, to prepare for the next session, and links to recordings of past ones, please ask the facilitators of your Sangha meditation sessions. Each monthly e-Talks practice session is open to anyone who would like to join; there is no requirement to have attended prior sessions.

We are studying :

  1. The Full Awareness of Breathing (Ānāpānasati Sûtra) - Commentaries by Thich Nhat Hanh in Breathe : you are alive.
  2. The Discourse on the Establishing of Mindfulness (Satipatthana Sûtra) (Commentaries by Thich Nhat Hanh in Transformation and Healing).
  3. The Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra) - Commentaries by Thich Nhat Hanh in The Diamond that Cuts through Illusion.
  4. The Lotus Sutra (Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra), 'Sūtra on the White Lotus of the True Dharma (Commentaries by Thich Nhat Hanh in Opening the Heart of the Cosmos).

The Four-Years Sangha Core Sutra Study Program is based on the sutras that Thay felt were the core, foundational teachings of the Buddha, the teachings in which he wanted his students to be deeply grounded in both understanding and practice. This progression of study was used for our monastic brothers and sisters in Plum Village, and also reflects the teachings that Thay transmitted to his lay students and followers during the many retreats he offered over the years.

Just as vegetation is sensible to sunlight, mental formations are sensitive to mindfulness. Mindfulness is the energy that can embrace and transform all mental formations. Mindfulness helps us leave behind "upside-down perceptions" and wakes us up to what is happening.
